PHS systems and equipment, including 32 kbps data communication services, were exhibited at the Japan Pavillion in the Asia Telecom 97 in June in Singapore. A survey on mobile phone and its data communication was made at the pavillion during the exhibition. The following is a brief summary of the survey based on 385 replies.

People from various businesses and organizations replied to the questionnaire and might have participated at Asia Telecom as per Figs. 1 and 2

Nearly a half of the mobile phone users have PDA and 28% have a pager based model.
More than a half (54%) of the PDA users are satisfied with their PDA, and another 37% of users are reasonably or acceptably satisfied. Only 9% of users are dissatisfied.
When asked about "PHS 32 kbps data communication service," most (70%) were not yet aware of it.

3. Application of data communication:
Major application of data communication is for Internet/intranet and for email as per Fig. 3. Only 8% is for digital image data transmission, which is expected to increase as a new application. On the other hand, most application (69%) is for business use.

4. Requirements for PHS 32 kbps data communication service:
most important factors for the above service are wider coverage, better quality, international roaming, and price of the handset as per Fig. 4.
Regarding an acceptable extra price for data communication from the conventional voice-only mobile phones, 42% of respondents accept 10%up and 39% of repondants accept 30% up, which may be the maximum level.
As to expected application areas, 55% are in public and 42% in the office building. It seems that PHS is expected to be used in the office as well in as in public areas.
