Wide variety of PHS Cell Stations

The number of PHS subscribers in Japan surpassed the seven million mark in August 1997 thanks to enlargement of the service area. To accommodate the increasing number of PHS subscribers, cell stations have been installed in numerous locations.
PHS cell stations, because they are very compact, can be easily installed anywhere there is an ISDN connection and power supply.
There are many different types of CS that can be installed, depending on the location.

Group 1, shows the kinds of location, such as urban areas with many pedestrians, that can be used
a) Telephone box
The equipment is installed on the ceiling inside the box. To preserve the beautiful view, only the antenna can be seen from the outside.
At a glance it seems to be one antenna, but it consists of two parts to improve functionality with top-and-bottom diversity.
b) Installation on a traffic light pole at a crossing. Traffic light poles ensure efficient, wide coverage, especially in urban areas with many pedestrians and buildings.
c) and d) Installed on the top and in the middle of utility poles at the road side. Similar to (b), these installations ensure efficient, wide coverage along the road.

Group 2, shows various installation in and on buildings
a) and b) on the roofs
c) attached to the wall of a building
For areas where there is little communications traffic and little interference, installation on large buildings is an efficient solution for ensuring wider coverage. The equipment is protected against lightening damage through installation in a lightening rod protection area.
A diversity system with multiple antennas is also employed to improve functionality.
d) Inside a building
Even in places where cellular phones don’t function, PHS can be used, thanks to this cell station. For aesthetic reasons, the equipment is partially hidden.
Photo 3, shows a specially constructed pole.
For areas where there is no building available, poles are constructed for installation of the radio equipment and antenna.
Group 4, shows underground installation.
a) The radio equipment is installed inside the ceiling cover, from the subway station platform only the antenna can be seen.
b) In an underground shopping mall with low ceilings, flat panel antennas are employed so as not to disturb pedestrians.
The operational status of each piece of radio equipment is regularly monitored and central control and maintenance systems are operated by each carrier.
