The 1998 PHS MoU AGM and 3rd Symposium Held in Sydney


The successful 1998 Annual General Meeting and 3rd PHS Symposium was held in Sydney, Australia on July 31, 1998

The Annual 1998 General Meeting of PHS MoU Group and the 3rd PHS Symposium were held on July 31 at the Wentworth Hotel in Sydney, Australia with nearly 150 participants.

The Annual General Meeting was opened at 10:00 am with 72 persons of the PHS MoU Group Members. As the two year terms of the Chairman and Vice Chairmen were completed, the meeting first elected the following members to the new Chairman and Vice Chairmen.
- Chairman: Hitomi Murakami, Ph. D, Eng., Chairman of Technical Assembly, the Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) and Managing Director of Global Multimedia Business Department, Marketing and Sales Headquarter of Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd. (KDD).
- Vice Chairman: Mr. Brendan McManus, Chairman of Australian PHS Forum and Director of Business Development, NEC Australia Pty Ltd.
- Vice Chairman: Mr. Masayoshi Wakao, Managing Director, Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB), Japan.
Representing newly elected Chairman and Vice Chairmen, Dr. H. Murakami delivered an inauguration speech. (See following article)
Invited from the Telecommunications Authorities in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Japan were; Dr. Bob Horton, Deputy Chairman of Australian Communications Authority, Mr. Eman S. Sumantri, Deputy Director General for Telecommunications, Directorate General of Posts and Telecommunications in Indonesia, Mr. Leith Comer, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Commerce of New Zealand, and Mr. Katsuya Watanabe, Director of Multimedia Mobile Communications Office, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in Japan. See next page for the congratulatory speeches. Representing the regional PHS Forum, Mr. FX Soehartono, Chairman of Indonesian PHS Forum, gave a speech.

PHS MoU Group has welcomed the following two companies as the Signatory Members and 9 organizations were approved as the Observer Members.
- Alcatel ITS Japan in Tokyo, Japan: Alcatel Alsthom, head-quartered in France, is one of the world leaders in the telecommunications industry. Its subsidiary organization in Japan joined the Group.
- SR Telecom, Inc. (SRT) in St. Laurent, Quebec, Canada: SRT, founded in 1981, is one of the world leaders in point-to-multipoint microwave radio and wireless loop systems with more than 1,000 people in 17 countries.

The activities in the fiscal year 1997 were reported by each chairman of Technical, Business, Promotion and Next Generation PHS Study Working Groups.

Activity Plan: New Structure

The activity plan in the fiscal year 1998, which will be executed under the organization in Figure 1, was approved unanimously. PHS MoU Group will place more efforts on promotion and publicity in 1998. All of the proposed agenda was also approved.


Third PHS Symposium: Spreading the Word

The 3rd PHS Symposium, supported by Australian PHS Forum and PIAF (PHS Internet Access Forum), was held in the same location in the afternoon on July 31 with 150 participants. Mr. McManus, Vice Chairman of the Group, moderated the symposium.
Dr. Murakami, Chairman of the Group, gave a welcome opening speech, emphasizing that:
* PHS is expanding steadily,
* PHS public service in Thailand will start very soon on a commercial basis,
* PHS frequency is secured in the frequency allocation of IMT-2000 in Japan

PHS Exhibition: Latest Technology on Show

The latest PHS equipment and services were exhibited by leading PHS MoU Group members including ArrayComm, DDI Tokyo Pocket, DENSO, FUJITSU, Hitachi, INFOCOMM, Kyocera, Kyushu Matsushita, Matsushita Communication, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Nitsuko, NTT Central Personal and PIAF.
Wristwatch PHS phone, the smallest in the world, was demonstrated by connecting to the actual PSTN line and attracted a great deal of attention. Other exhibition, such as the latest integrated data terminal, indoor PHS system, WLL system, new billing system and so on, also attracted visitors.
