PHS at COM JAPAN 1999


“COM JAPAN 1999,” one of the biggest Japanese communications events, was held from November 2 through 5 at Tokyo International Exhibition Center (Tokyo Big Sight), drawing some 200,000 people. About 300 companies and organizations from Japan as well as foreign countries set up their booths at this event, held under the auspices of Communications Industry Association of Japan, Japan Electronic Industry Development Association and Japan Personal Computer Software Association.

The latest PHS terminals were put on display by NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo), DDI Tokyo Pocket Telephone Inc. (DDI-P), Nitsuko Corp., Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd., Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Kyocera Corp., Kokusai Electric Co., Ltd., NEC Corp. and other manufacturers.

These products included NTT DoCoMo’s PHS/PDC dual-mode terminals (refer to MoU News No. 22), DDI-P’s H” terminals (refer to MoU News No. 23) and Kyocera’s Visual Phone (refer to MoU News No. 23). Meanwhile, Nitsuko introduced its compact PHS terminal “Free Shot,” which offers multiple functionalities such as telephone, e-mail, hand-written memorandum and scheduling. Sanyo introduced its PHS prototype terminal equipped with a digital camera. This product allows users to capture high-quality photo images and to immediately transmit them using PHS’s high-speed data communications services.

PHS-PBX systems, PHS-WLL systems, PHS CSs (Cell Stations) and other PHS-related devices were also put on display.
