Outline of feel H"

DDI Pocket Inc. has been providing H" (pronounce "edge"), services in which customers can use "open-architecture Internet" with mobile terminals. The H", pursuing three goals of "hybrid," "high-quality" and "hyper," has acquired a good reputation. The company has added a new service called "feel H" (pronounce "feel edge")" to the H". The feel H" is equipped with "color screen," and enables "music-compatibility using real-sampling pulse code modulation (PCM) sound source LSI," "compatibility with media mix-type content including image/music/text" and "transmission and reception of 10,000-kanji (Chinese) -character (20,000 bytes) text." The feel H" enables users to enjoy images and sound easily with the characteristics of PHS including 64-kbps high-speed data communications, low-tariff and power-saving features.

Features of feel H"

1. Picture-taking function
By connecting with an ultra-small digital camera unit "Treva" (functions: imaging device 1/4-inch C-MOS type image sensor, 96 x 72 dots, fixed focus, about 10g), users can send images taken and can create image content easily. These functions enable the feel H" to provide diversified content including printing images taken by users, creating websites with images only at terminals and making/sending greeting cards with pictures. Users can also operate moving content by using consecutive still image reproducing functions (maximum eight images, two images per second at the maximum speed).
2. Mounting PCM sound source
By equipped with PCM sound source, tones, etc., of musical instruments such as piano can be reproduced in realistic sound. The characteristics are that this can be used not only for "incoming indicator melody" (a service that music already composed is played at receiving calls and that receives composed music from an Internet content provider (ICP) to terminal) but also for background music.
3. Content
Following content is realized by using displaying function of "text" simultaneously with "image" of color liquid crystal display (LCD) and "music" of PCM sound source:
\ Texts are displayed with closed-captioning while playing music and showing still images. (Example: Karaoke sing-along)
\ Continuous still images, music and texts are reproduced at the same time. (Examples: Movie information, commercial advertisements, etc.)
The feel H" utilizes basic functions of H" such as 64kbps high-speed communications function and low tariff. It has service functions of the "next-generation multifunctional media" fusing consumer electronics function of images/music and communications function, far from conventional terminals for speaking, browsing and reading.

Basic specifications of feel H" terminal

1. Functions for coping with color images
1) Compatibility with ultra-small digital camera unit "Treva"
The feel H" terminals are equipped with a function for connection with an ultra-small digital camera unit. When attached, this unit takes images as digital camera and transmits the images. With its ultra-small design that enables the 10-gram unit to be hung on the feel H" terminal strap, "Treva" can always be carried with the terminal.
2) Large-screen color LCD
For the purpose of fully utilizing expression power of color images, a large-screen color LCD is employed.
3) Continuous still image reproduction function
Maximum eight still images can be consecutively shown at the maximum speed of two images per second.
2. Functions for music
1) PCM sound source
Equipped with PCM sound source, sound tones of instruments such as piano can be played in realistic and high-fidelity sound. (100 sound tones, 12 codes.)
2) Wide-range speaker
The attractive sound of PCM sound source is enhanced to the limit.
3. Multimedia content
1) Simultaneous expression of still images, sounds and texts (an image, five-minute long tune, about a thousand letters of text) can be used for such content as Karaoke.
2) Simultaneous expression of continuous still images reproduction function, sound and text (maximum eight still images, maximum speed two still images per second, some 30-second long tune, about 1,000-kanji (Chinese)-character (2,000 bytes) text) can be used for promotion content such as movie information and commercial advertisement.
3) Incoming indicator melody (about 30 seconds) The PCM sound source can be used for an incoming indicator melody.
4. Diversity antenna
With plural built-in antennas, sensitivity of communications quality is improved further.
5. Compatibility with 10,000-kanji (Chinese) -character (20,000 bytes) text of e-mail (at reception)
Sufficient number of letters is secured for receiving e-mails sent from personal computers.
6. H"LINK 64k connection
A 64-kbps connection speed, the fastest IP connection service using a PHS handset, is realized.
7. Safe driving mode
The mode will provide auto reply while users are driving a car with easy handset operation.

Content for feel H"

By combining images, sounds and texts freely, content for H"LINK will be expanded drastically. By the end of November 2000, 45 types of content for feel H" will be offered.
