FITEL of Taiwan Launches PHS Services


First International Telecom Corp. (FITEL), a Taiwan-based telecommunications carrier that constructed a PHS service network, held a press conference, entitled the "grand launch press conference of the PHS service," at Broadway Hall Imperial, New York Shopping Center, Taipei, Taiwan, on May 7, 2001.

At the conference, some one thousand guests were invited, including the PHS MoU Group members (Chairperson Nobuhiro Horisaki, Vice Chair Sam Endy, representatives from Kyocera Corp., Sanyo Electric Corp., KDDI Corp., DDI POCKET Corp., UTStarcom, Matsushita Communication Co., Ltd., etc., totaling some 20 people).

Through presentations utilizing videos and demonstrations, the outline of the PHS service was introduced, followed by congratulatory speeches by executives and government officials. At the venue, applications for subscription to the PHS service were accepted and presentations/demonstrations were crowded with many attendants.

FITEL's Chairman Ming Chien and President Charlie C.Y. Wu officially declared the launch of the PHS service amidst thundering applause from all the attendants. Though there is cut-throat competition in the Taiwan mobile communications market among several GMS mobile carriers, FITEL is full of confidence that it can compete with other major players in telecommunication services to win a substantial market share, focusing on advantageous high-speed data transmission services, under the keywords "Advanced, Super Value, Healthy."

  • Advanced:
      Accessibility to various value-added services through the use of 64-kbit/s high-speed data transmission capacity. The same latest services as in Japan are offered.

  • Super Value:
      PHS's tariff is significantly lower than that of GSM, at about one-half. Cooperating with more than 30 content providers of Taiwan and overseas, FITEL PHS provides 60 items, more than one hundred most fashionable and most unique value-added service contents.

  • Healthy:
      The low emission PHS system is considered as the most healthy communications system available today. Strength of electromagnetic field emitted from GSM handset is as high as 0.6W, 60 times that of 0.01W for PHS handset.

Wireless online is the mainstream of mobile phone for the future. FITEL cooperates with HiNet of Chunghwa Telecommunication for matured PHS technologies to provide 64-kbit/s wireless online services. It can also combine with Notebook computers and PDAs to pick up network data from online and to really attain the Killer Applications. Since this is the first joint service of public and private Taiwanese telecommunications operators, it has attracted especially wide attention. FITEL (http://www.fitel.net.tw) will expand service areas in the City of Taipei to acquire 380,000 subscribers as a target. In the long term, its service areas for the PHS service will be expanded to include Taichung, Gaoshung and other cities.
