PHS Packet Data Service Starts

Data communications is generally classified into two systems, circuit switching and packet switching. In case of the circuit switching data communications system, one user occupies one channel with high data transmission capability each; thus, this would be rather suitable for continuous and large capacity data communications such as file transfer.
On the other hand, in case of the packet switching data communications system, channels are used only when packet data are sent; thus, this would be suitable for intermittent data communications such as e-mail, web browsing, etc. for multiple users to share the channels instead.

Packet Communications

As for the PHS, circuit switching wireless data communications system called PIAFS (PHS Internet Access Forum Standard) has already become available. However, taking an increasing data communications traffic for web access, etc. into consideration, still there are strong demands for packet switching system as well.
In response to these demands, on June 1, 2001, DDI POCKET, Inc. launched new packet data communications service called "Air H"."

1. Outline of " Air H" "

" Air H" " enables data communications at more inexpensive rates through packet communications in addition to the existing 64kbit/s circuit switching communications. Upon introduction of the packet communications, DDI POCKET has also realized further large-capacity and lower costs for H" service, which is efficient for wireline usage, through the use of IP-based networks (exclusive use for data communications) in wireline sections.

2. Two communications methods and rate plans
Two communications methods are newly introduced to "Air H"."
  1. Flex change method

  2. In accordance with data volume, this method automatically selects and switches "32kbit/s packet" communications or "64kbit/s circuit switching" communications.

  3. 32kbit/s packet method

  4. This method employs "32kbit/s packet" communications only.
For each method, two rate plans are provided that make good use of the high cost performance of backbone networks, so as to meet versatile user demands.
  1. "Net 25" (semi-flat-rate tariff): For "Flex change method"

  2. Basic monthly charge: 5,800 yen (Approx. US$48/Month). Basic monthly charge includes 25-hourOs worth of communications charges. A suitable course for moderate (or average) users who are making phone calls lasting several tens of minutes to one hour per day.

  3. "Continuous access course" (flat-rate tariff): For "32kbit/s packet method"

  4. Basic monthly charge: 5,800 yen (Approx. US$48/Month). A suitable course for heavy users who are making phone calls lasting more than one hour per day.

3. " Air H" " compatible Internet access service and terminals
    Card terminal

" Air H" " compatible Internet access service providers at present are PRIN (by DDI POCKET) and DION (by KDDI), however, other providers are expected to follow suite.
Two " Air H" " compatible communications cards are now available.
These are the PC card-type "Air H" Card" from Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) and the compact flash-type "Air H" card petit" from TDK Corp.
