Seiko Instruments launches world's smallest SD card type PHS Terminal

- Available for DDI POCKET's AirH" service -

Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) has announced that it will launch an SD card (*1) type wireless terminal available for DDI POCKET's AirH" (*2) 32-kbps packet, 64-kbps PIAFS and 32-kbps PIAFS services by the end of 2002.

SII succeeded in miniaturizing the existing PC card type wireless terminal to the SD card size while maintaining the same level of performance. Its size and weight are approximately 55mm x 24mm and 6g, respectively, which is 45% less-volume and 30% less-weight as compared with a CF (Compact Flash) card.

In order to use a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) as a wireless communication device, a mobile phone with a connection cable, a CF card type wireless terminal or other card type wireless terminal with card slot adapter (jacket) is usually necessary. However, as the world's smallest and lightest SD card type wireless terminal emerges, this application will be even easier than in the past. Additionally, the PDA's usability will be enhanced with its increasing mobility and further miniaturization.

SII is promoting the SD card application for use with electronic devices in addition to the PC and the PDA. It is an active member of the "SD Card Association" and hopes for future growth of the ubiquitous communication market with the wide application of this technology.

(*1) The SD(Secure Digital) card is one of the memory card standards. The interface is used not only as memory card slot but also I/O card slot.
(*2) AirH" is a packet communication service provided by DDI-POCKET.
