1) Latest Update for PHS Operation in Taiwan:
      (the presentation material is here.)
      - Dr. Hann-Bin Chuang: First International Telecom Corp. (FITEL) -

Dr. Hann-Bin Chuang
FITEL's PHS business has achieved quite successful growth in 2002 and especially for recent two months that's remarkable thanks to the sales promotion "No Monthly Charge". We decided to stop the no monthly charge from first of this year, but the charge is minimum cost. In Taiwan market where the GSM is dominant, it's essential to reduce PHS subscribers' usage fee burden in order to compete with the GSM. Current PHS subscribers are more than 500,000 and ARPU (Average monthly Revenue Per User) is NT$650 (Approx. US$18).

Several hundred CSs (Cell Stations) are installed monthly to expand the service area and the number of CS reached 8,153 by the end of 2002. We expect to cover Kaoshiung area within this year.
The most important aspect of the successful PHS business is the terminal (Personal Station = PS). Currently three models are available in the market. One of them is SANYO Electric Co., Ltd's "J88" which sold 450,000 units and this model is sold more than any other handsets, including GSM, in Taiwan. "J95" launched in last year is the first color LCD handset in Taiwan including the GSM handsets. This is a high-end and high price model, however, ARPU for data communications is also high. Clamshell type "J89" with four level monochrome LCD and exclusive button for easy access to the data application was launched last month. This is a low price model targeting the young people and we expect to increase the subscribers up to one million by the end of this year mainly with this model.

We are also studying the possibility of launching the PHS/GSM Dual-Mode PS, voice only PS and data cards (PCMCIA, CF (Compact Flash), SD) as well. We think that the packet mode would be important for data applications and accordingly, we are changing our network to be available for the packet mode.

(Presentation on "J88" and "J95" using photos etc. and on "MiMi(Mobile Information Mobile Internet)"

data access procedures comparison for those two models was made.)

In order to differentiate from the GSM, the international roaming service to Japan was launched last year and this service has been well accepted by high-end users traveling to Japan. MiMi service portal enhancement is also making good progress and as for the SMS (Short Messaging Service), now it's become possible to connect with three GSM operators and, in the near future, with two more which used to be difficult. By the end of February, SMS exchange will also become possible with China Mobile's subscribers as well.

As for Promotion Strategy, it was quite successful to eliminate the monthly fee and we will focus on low radiation issue as one solicitation from now on. And further, to suppress the subsidy as possible would be important.

According to our traffic analysis, 44% of the total traffic is outgoing calls to GSM phones and 23% is PHS-PHS connection which is increasing. The combined data traffic of MiMi and WiWi (Wireless Information Wireless Internet : usage as wireless modem) is 15% and this figure is fairly high to show that the data communication is successful.

Our revenue analysis shows that the revenue from calls to the GSM occupies 60% due to its high tariff and only 8% is earned from the data communication as its fee is less expensive.

2) SD Card type PHS Terminal AH-S101S : (the presentation material is here.)

- Mr. Toru Ariga : Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) -

Mr. Toru Ariga
SII is one of the PC card type PHS terminal (Personal Station = PS) vendors and today I'd like to introduce the latest and the smallest PHS terminal called "AH-S101S" which was developed last year with DDI POCKET, Inc.'s cooperation.

SII launched the PHS data modem card in 1996 almost at the same as the PHS commercial service started, however, there were mobile users' strong requests for more sophisticated and comfortable device because this PC card needed a connection cable and PHS terminal to use.
PC card type PHS terminal was developed to accommodate such requests by simply inserting it into the PC's card slot for wireless Internet access. Such concept was well accepted by mobile users. After that, other PC card type PHS terminals available for 32 Kbps PIAFS, 64 Kbps PIAFS and packet data communications have been introduced as the data communications service advances.

We put all of these features into an SD (Secure Digital) card size device and such a small device can be applied not only to the consumer market but also to the embedded system markets as well.
One of this device's concepts is to provide the standard device. The term "Standard" means to be acceptable to many platform vendors and this is the very reason for having selected the SD card. Further, it's also applicable to other electronic devices than the PC and PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) such as video camera, audio set, set top box, car electronics, security system etc. This is also one of those concepts.

There were two subjects to be solved for developing this device, one was to develop the BBIC (Base Band IC) including SDIO (SD I/O) interface and the other was the RF layout optimization to get enough gain by small antenna. Applicability to DDI POCKET's 32 Kbps Packet/32 Kbps PIAFS/64 Kbps PIAFS services, small size of 55 X 24 X 6.6mm, light weight of 6g, SDIO Interface are some of the main items which are included in the specification of "AH-S101S".

Platform and device driver are key points. Driver for "Palm" has already been completed, however, for TOSHIBA CORPORATION's "Genio" is still a betaversion, for "PocketPC" and other platforms are now under development.

We have a plan of adding 128 Kbps Packet mode type and "Memory Stick" card type terminal and we have been receiving inquiries to those from more than 20 embedded system makers or vendors. This is because AH-S101S is a complete terminal rather than only a module and can easily be incorporated in the system.

"SD Card Association" was established for worldwide promotion of the SD card interface and originally started with the SD memory interface, however, it's focusing on SDIO interface at present. "PHS Task Group" was formed within "I/O Working Group" to standardize the "SDIO PHS Interface Specification" and its Version 1.0 is now being discussed at the Technical Committee to be available for everyone after it's officially released
