Next Generation PHS

    The next generation PHS is well designed system as a succeeding system of the existing PHS and its exclusive Ad hoc WG mainly for standardization has officially been approved at the PHS MoU Group's 19th General Meeting.

   Standardization activities for the next generation PHS are now being progressed rapidly at this new Ad hoc WG, here we introduce "what's the next generation PHS?" and its related information briefly.


What's the Next Generation PHS?

    The next generation PHS is a high-speed and high-capacity broadband wireless system having introduced the newly developed technologies based on various technical features of the PHS which has been spread as micro-cell based wireless access system.


Features of the Next Generation PHS

   The next generation PHS is now being developed to have the following features.

Maximum data speed is more than 20Mbps

  • To realize higher broadband speed (than 3G systems)
Based on co-existence with the existing PHS
  • TDD, 5ms symmetric frame structure
Succeeding the existing PHS' features
  • Micro-cell (for high frequency utilization efficiency)
  • Autonomous decentralized control technology(Flexibility of "expansion and reinforcement of the service area")
  • Maximum utilization of the smart antenna technology
  • mprovement of performance against fading (by Adaptive Array antenna)
  • Higher data speed and frequency utilization efficiency (SDMA, MIMO)

Experiments on the Next Generation PHS

    The experiments on the next generation PHS have been conducted from the end of January 2006 by WILLCOM Inc. (WILLCOM).

   An evaluation of the transmission performance etc. under various utilization environments, Indoor Still/ Outdoor Still/ Outdoor High-speed Moving etc. is being conducted in Toranomon area where WILLCOM's headquarters is located.

   WILLCOM is planning to conduct a proof test as well which is closer to the commercial use in addition to the ongoing one.

Standardization Activities for the Next Generation PHS

   The PHS MoU Group is aiming to recommend the next generation PHS to ITU as one of the BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) technologies after having standardized it internally and now preparing for that.
