2. Atheros PHS Overview: Single-Chip Solution

Mr. Mark Tian of Atheros Communication, Inc., which has newly become a member of PHS MoU Group made a presentation about their Single-Chip solution for PHS handset.

Atheros Communications is a leading developer of semiconductor system solutions for wireless communications products. Atheros combines its wireless systems expertise with high-performance radio frequency (RF), mixed signal and digital semiconductor design skills to provide highly integrated chipsets that are manufacturable on low-cost, standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes. Atheros technology is being used by a broad base of leading customers, including personal computer, networking equipment and handset manufacturers.

Atheros Communications, Inc. provides a portfolio of multichip and single chip products ranging from entry-level wireless networking products for home and small office markets to wireless infrastructure systems-on-chip with network management for the enterprise market. In addition, the company offers single chip cellular solution for PHS/PAS systems.

The wireless systems solutions are used for applications in the personal computer, enterprise access, small office and home networking, mobile communications, and consumer electronics markets. Many leading companies in the world chose Atheros' solution.

The key competitive advantage Atheros has is in making innovative RF technology on CMOS process.

The history of Atheros started from chipsets of 802.11a in 2001, and provided Single-chip solution for the first time in the world for PHS handset in 2005.

Atheros solution uses only 1 chip though Legacy PHS solution required 4 chipsets before. This innovation enables dramatic reduction in total part count and integrates baseband and transceiver, digital and analog audio paths & application processor on the single chip.

It is reported by third party that 5 of best selling 15 handsets in 2006 are based on Atheros chipset. In addition, Atheros-based handset won the first place in best selling handsets, in China. Atheros-Based handsets acquired high share in upper price market and it is very valuable.

Single-chip solution of Atheros is adopted in the terminal that succeeds very much in a Chinese market named X30 of UTS, and a thin, light design is enabled.
