Key Presentation GS-01: WILLCOM's Business Strategy

by Mr. Masaki Kikugawa, Representative Director & President, CEO of WILLCOM, Inc.

President Kikugawa made a presentation titled WILLCOM’s business strategy. He indicated in his presentation that for the year of 2007, WILLCOM has made the strategy to reinforce three businesses including network, service and product.

WILLCOM has built 160 thousands micro cell stations in Japan during the 12-year’s development, and by March, 2007, the network has covered 99.3% of the total Japanese population. Comparing to macro cell system, to build a micro cell system takes more effort at the beginning and more time to construct an area, but it ought to be emphasized that no other network is as suitable as PHS for such a large capacity communication as flat-rate voice service and packet data service.

Centered on the keyword of No Limit, which is WILLCOM’s exclusive feature to allow utilization of a mobile service with no consciousness of distance, place, time and cost, seven widely-supported characteristics of WILLCOM are explained.

1.    advantage on area brought by micro cell network
2.    flat rate on voice/data service
3.    clear voice
4.    low electromagnetic wave adopted by 3,500 medical institutions countrywide
5.    small-scale production of versatile handset models led by SIM style concept
6.    smart phone market created with W-ZERO3
7.    community created on the horizontal expansion of Open Platform

In order to provide customers with worthy services at low cost more reasonably, The three elements of network, service and product are emphasized in the business strategy for 2007.

The correspondence to advancement communication standard W-OAM is being pushed forward at downtown areas of the key metropolitans nationwide. When the correspondence to W-OAM is realized, even voice and data communication at places where signals are weak will not be cut off easily, at places where radio wave condition is good, data tend to be transferred in even higher speed than now. If the circuit for a base station is upgraded from ISDN to IP network, the present maximum data communication speed of 500kbps can be easily accelerated to a maximum of 800kbps.

1.   Network

The development of Next-generation PHS, which targets on a maximum communication speed of 20Mbps is propelled positively. Next-generation PHS, which had been acknowledged as a standard specification of PHS MoU Group was recommended as one of the international standards of BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) by ITU-R (Radio Communications Sector of International Telecommunication Union) in March 2007.

2.   Service

Taking advantage of the flat-rate and smart-phone elements, combination service, which emphasizes on introducing and consolidating the network for companies interested in a combined intranet, is strengthened and measures for family layers are taken.

Since PHS is initially developed as an extended technology of cordless handset of home telephone, WILLCOM has been taking positive attitude towards FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) from the beginning of business. In data communication, WILLCOM provides the business users with the environment that allows connection to a company’s Intranet from a distance point.

3.   Product

Due to the advance of Open Platform, concept models and new products are developed. The release was made on a new terminal carrying Windows Mobile 6 ( http://x-w.jp ) and on the join of a new terminal manufacturer, TOSHIBA.

The presentation was closed with the encouragement that “I’d like to work hard together with all WILLCOM staffs, based on the keyword of No Limit and centered with the features of flat rate and micro cell.”
