Report from CEATEC Japan 2007

Various PHS related devices were exhibited on WILLCOM Core Module Forum (WCMF) during CEATEC Japan 2007, which was held in Makuhari Messe, Chiba, from October 2 to October 6.

Displayed items include various concept SIM-style jackets, various PHS sample products designed with W-SIM concept by 11 WCMF member companies and PHS development platform, which is regarded as an important support to the future development.
Respective companies also displayed its feature products designed with W-SIM concept as always.
Sharp displayed PDA series from W-ZERO3, the model initiated smart –phone boom, to the latest model of Advanced W-ZERO3es. W-ZERO3 series enjoyed high popularity among visitors as it has always had.
The model of nani, which was released by Sophia Systems and carries 4.3 inch LCD, received many inquiries from non- individual business clients.
It is a pity but NEC System Technologies said it was having no plan to expand production for watch with mobile TV, which is the campaign commodity for Asahi beer last year.
The Office Solution IP PHS Station made by Abit Corp., which responds to PHS private mode, also attracted various interests during the display. The W-SIM network adaptor, which was released by Ultra-X Asia Pacific Inc. and named OSX-1, realized the connection to camera module and transference of camera image.
The 8.4 inch multi-functional information monitor, which was made by Mitachi and named MIU Face, aims at providing customized products according to different needs of different clients. Mikke!GPS made by Virgo Wave Inc. is an anti-crime mobile designed for young primary school students while taking in consideration of various father’s suggestions and thoughts.
Various PHS devices appeared by making use of W-SIM as described above.


On the other hand, many companies also displayed their W-SIM development platform. Freescale’s PHS development platform carries i.MX31/ARM11 and responds to multi-OS such as Linux and Windows CE. Sandgate3-P is a PHS development platform developed by Sophia Systems.
It carries marble PXA310 and is possible to be adopted for reference design too.
Akita Electronics Systems showed various demonstrations on the Windows CE-based platform solution, which carries Renesas SH-4A/4R.
Besides, PHS-used software including W-SIM emulator made by NEC System Technologies, W-SIM evaluation kit made by NetIndex, communication application control device made by Sinby Corp., are displayed and introduced to facilitate the development of W-SIM style.
With this comprehensive and convenient development environment is built, it is expected that versatile W-SIM style products is to be released to the market in future.
