A solution to Digital Divide by PHS

(By Koseki, WILLCOM Inc.)

WILLCOM concluded its agreement with Yamagata Prefecture on Oct. 19, 2008 regarding the cooperation to activate local economy.

This is a new action of government-business cooperation to push forward local economy through BWA method.

Japanese carriers are competing fiercely towards the start of BWA service. However, Japan is an island country, mountain area holds more than 75% of the territory and there are many remote islands in addition. Local governments are facing the trouble to build and maintain infrastructure for those disadvantageous areas. Especially for local educational and medical institutions, IP is the only solution.

However, it is always the case that even ADSL hasn’t been introduced in these disadvantageous areas. These areas are usually referred to as digital divide areas.
Therefore, WILLCOM started a new digital divide strategy jointly with the local government.

The latest IP system that corresponds to W-OAM can provide data communication at up to 800Kbps

Motoaikai of Shinjo City at Yamagata Prefecture is a mountain area where broadband connection is awaited till today. Local residents are very happy that they are not able to obtain information on internet with the introduction of WILLCOM’s W-OAM technology. When BWA becomes more necessary in the future, this system can be shifted to XGP smoothly.
