Location Detection System Using PHS Demonstrated at COMDEX Tokyo '97
The Personal Handyphone System (PHS) constantly registers the positions of mobile terminals in each zone served by some cell stations. Using these characteristics, a concept of new location information service based on the use of its PHS radio cell stations was announced and its trial system is being tested by NTT Central Personal Communications Network Inc. The trial system was also demonstrated at COMDEX Japan '97 this April.
The company figures that a position detection service can be provided by using the unique location information transmitted by each radio cell station. Use of this service would enable a trucking company to dispatch its trucks efficiently because it would always know their general whereabouts. It would also facilitate a service whereby drivers traveling in an unfamiliar area could locate their position on a map display shown on a portable information terminal.
