PHS Technical Seminars
The Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) formed the Asia-Pacific Mobile Communications Forum at the end of February 1994 to promote the penetration and awareness of PHS by organizing PHS technical seminars. In the three years since then to the end of March 1997, 24 PHS technical seminars have been held in 23 cities of 17 countries. A total of 3,237 persons have attended these seminars, including telecommunications administration officials and people involved in the telecommunications business in the host countries.

In areas where telecommunications infrastructure is relatively in place, attendees have shown strong interest in PHS as a mobile communications system. In other areas, seminar participants have been strongly interested in PHS as a wireless local loop (WLL). For that reason, the portion of the program devoted to WLL was expanded so as to tailor the technical seminar to the wishes of the host area.
Persons from ARIB member organizations have participated in the seminars as lecturers, and the telecommunications administration and telecommunications operating bodies in the host countries have provided cooperation in the form of cosponsorship or support of the seminars. Exchanges of information with persons from the host areas have led to a shared understanding of the actual circumstances and needs in each country and the presentation of proposed solutions. These activities have helped to open avenues for the possible introduction of PHS.
At the end of March 1997, 16 countries had decided to adopt or introduce PHS and field trials were under way in 10 countries. Moreover, other countries were also considering the idea of introducing PHS. It is believed that the PHS technical seminars have contributed significantly to these results.
